329A HG Hitchin - Langley - Nup End - Knebworth - Datchworth

Hertford: GS62 on 329 The 329 is another of Hertford's straggling rural routes, connecting a string of villages across agricultural Hertfordshire to the north-west of Hertford, to Knebworth. The low bridge at Knebworth Station required the use of single-deckers. Beyond Knebworth the route continued out to Nup End, where the triangular road junction provided a convenient turning point. There were also Saturday short-workings from Hertford to Bull's Green.

The Tuesdays and Saturdays 329A might be expected to be a Hitchin route, but it was operated by a Hertford bus. It worked out to Knebworth on the 329, then did two return 329A journeys, interleaved with short workings on the 386, before a final short to Nup End and a late afternoon trip back to Hertford as a 329. The route between Hitchin and Tower Lodge was shared with Birch's Bedford - London bus service.

GS32 waits in the modern Hertford Bus Station for an early turn on the 329 all the way to Nup End, at the start of the June 2001 Running Day.
The 329 was worked by Leyland Cubs up until November 1953 when GSs replaced them at Hertford.

When the 386 workings were altered in October 1965 part of the reason for the continued existence of the 329A route disappeared, and it was drastically altered to operate between Nup End and Hertford via Datchworth, on Tuesdays and Saturdays only, abandoning the Nup End to Hitchin route. The 329 operated Hertford to Nup End via Woolmer Green still, but only on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

This arrangement lasted only until May 1966, when the Woolmer Green journeys disappeared, and all journeys operated via Nut Green and Datchworth, using the 329 number, on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. There was no Thursday or Sunday service. Hertford's GSs were all replaced by omo RFs by November 1968.

GS2 ran through from Hertford to Hitchin during the June 2003 Running Day. Leaving Hertford as a 329 to Nup End it ran through typical Hertfordhire countryside. On the way it posed at Bulls Green wearing the short-working blinds for the 329.

Nup End: GS2 on 329A Hitchin: GS32 on 329A

At Nup End it transformed from a 329 into a 329A for the run down to Hitchin. GS32 also ran through to Hitchin later the same day.

Allocation

Hertford had a large allocation of GSs, from which were drawn those required for the 329/A (one on most days, two on Saturdays). They interworked onto the 333, 372, 386 and 388.
