Bromley Mini Running Day

Sunday 7th December 2014

Prepared by Ian Smith, 22nd December 2013.

Part Four: RM on 94

94: Bromley West Street to Grove Park: RM1397

RM1394 arrived in the dusk at West Street, and I climbed into the warmly glowing interior, and greeted the crew. The familiar journey to Grove Park, again from my schooldays, but on RTs then, was quite brief, and totally uneventful, if nostalgic. We rumbled out of Bromley and onto Burnt Ah Lane, past St.Mary's and Plaistow Green, down the short hill where I used to race RTs on my bike, past Park Avenue and along to Southover. Past the parade of shops by St.Andrew's, then north up over the rise of Burnt Ash Lane, past where there was a London defence aerodrome in the First World War, and on over the County Boundary into the London Borough of Lewisham. Just near here my mother was almost hit by a doodlebug, which blew up the corresponding house in the next road instead. Not that I was there then. The avenue of plane trees, that originally required Tilling to use open-top buses along here, led us on to Grove Park. We pulled in to the 1950s bus terminus.

I decided that it was home-time for me. So I caught the RM back the short journey to the Southover stop, where I alighted and watched the RM pull away on its way to finish at Petts Wood.

Many thanks to the CBR team for organising the event, to TfL for permitting it, and to all the crews who worked so hard to make it work, make it enjoyable. Happy Christmas.
