481 LH Epsom Station - Epsom (Wells Estate)

GS42 at Stoke d'Abernon Stn, October 1997 481 route map The 481 was not dissimilar to the town to estate swingers of several GS routes. Except that there was no long route associated with the swinger - it was all that there was. The mile and a half-long route connected Epsom Station with The Wells Estate, out from the delights of central Epsom along the main road towards Leatherhead, then abruptly turning right onto the estate's narrow access road, over the railway onto Epsom Common, then left into the circular Wells Estate.

The route had been introduced in May 1953, using two rear-engined Cubs, CR13 and CR43.

GS42 wears a 481 blind at Stoke d'Abernon Station in October 1997.

Allocation

GS5 and GS17 took over from the CRs at Leatherhead in November 1953. Later a single bus sufficed, and from October 1958 the 481 was officially worked by omo RFs, with the GS relegated to duplicate status for use on the 422 and the 481. GS13 followed by GS14 maintained the service through the sixties until it was completely taken over by an RF in December 1967.
