GS13 at Harlow Bus Station on 393

GS13 rests in the Bus Station in Harlow New Town on a Running Day on Sunday 5th May 2013

381, 393 route map

The 393 was one of the first routes to serve the fledgling Harlow New Town. The route started in 1949 using Leyland Cubs from Epping to provide a roughly hourly service cross-country between Old Harlow and Hoddesdon.

Epping replaced its Leyland Cubs with new GS buses in December 1953, on both its 381 and 393 routes. The Epping GS buses blinds included a 396 blind for journeys beween Old Harlow and the garage at Epping.

The 393 underwent considerable change at its Harlow end as the New Town developed during the nineteen fifties, swallowing the villages and road network that had been there when the route started.

One-man operated RFs took over in October 1957.
