384A HG Hertford - Ware - Sacombe- Dane End

The 384A, like the 384, was a Hertford large saloon route, using RFs during the GS era. But there were occasions when a GS was sent out to work the rural route.

The route left Hertford, like so many others, along the busy main road to Ware. Here the GS would have shared the road with RTs and RFs, with 2RT2s on the 327 and, later, RMCs on the 715. There were plenty of GSs on this stretch too, with the 386 on some days of the week, or the 331, plus the 380/388/389 route to Harlow and/or Sawbridgeworth. At Ware the 384 and 384A turned north-westwards, quickly entering rolling countryside once the town was left behind. The bus called at the village of Tonwell, then continued up the main road towards Whempstead. But well before that village a sharp right turn onto a country lane sent it towards rustic Sacombe and Dane End. The two routes parted company here, with the 384 turning a sharp angle to head along skinny lanes to Whempstead, and on to Walkern, Stevenage and Letchworth. The 384A continued on up through the village, and on through Little Munden to Great Munden, where there was a turning circle apparently next to a farm in the middle of nowhere.
