381A EP Roydon - Epping - Coopersale Common

GS2 with 381 blinds, June 2002

On its way to the 2002 Hertford Running Day GS2 - still in Southern Motorways red and maroon livery - wore a 381 Toothill blind
The 381 was one of Epping's two Cub routes, on which the Cubs were displaced by GSs in December 1953. A long straggling route, it went out from Epping in two directions. Northwards it straggled across rural Essex to Tylers Cross and Roydon, while south-eastwards it passed Epping Station and went to Stewards Green, whence it visited variously Coopersale Common or Toothill. 381, 393 route map

In October 1957 the route was extended for two of the Saturday journeys beyond Toothill to Ongar Station - presumably to provide an Underground comnnection. The idea did not catch on, and the extension was withdrawn in January 1958, after just fourteen Saturdays - 28 journeys.

Latterly the RF replacements had some journeys to and from St.Margarets Station, and the 381 was amended to extend beyond Coopersale Common onto the direct road back into Epping.

Allocation

The 381 shared Epping's GS allocation with the 393. The buses included:

GS16: - 6/57
GS26: - 3/57
GS27: 6/61 - 10/62
GS29: 5/60 - 4/61
GS32: 1/57 - 2/57
GS37: 10/57 - 6/59
GS38: 12/53 - 10/56
GS40: 3/57 - 12/58
GS41: */55 -c12/56, 2/57 - 12/58
GS43: - 1/57, 3/57 - 7/58
GS44: - 3/57, 6/57 - 11/57, 4/61 - 1/62
GS71: */54 on loan from GR
The numbers available dropped after the 393 was converted to RF operation in October 1957, and there seems to have been a gap in GS provision at Epping between June 1959 and May 1960, after which there were again one or two GSs at a time through until October 1962, along with omo RFs. Then one of the RMC-displaced RFs took over from GS27.
