317 route map

The 317 after the war was a long meandering route from Watford via Sarratt and Bovingdon and down into Hemel Hempstead, followed by a long reach north to Ringshall and a loop back west and south to end at Berkhamsted. It was operated by the post-war Regals, the 15T13s, until July 1956, when it was converted to one-man operated buses. It was progressively cut back at the south end, and by 1962 was operating from Boxmoor Station to Berkhamsted. I don't know yet whether it had an official GS allocation at Two Waters, or whether it drew on spares for the 316 for some journeys. But GSs did work on it.

Allocation

GS17 and GS83 were Hemel Hempstead's regular buses, covering the 316 from its conversion to GS almost until its surrender, apart from overhauls, and available at times for the 317. GS68 and GS80 were also there for some time, while others came and went as required. In October 1962 there was a change-round, following widespread displacements of GSs elsewhere in the fleet, and GSs 42 and 51 arrived to complement GS17. This provided scope for the spares to be used on the 317. After the 316 went in May 1964 the Hemel Hempstead allocation of GS buses dropped to one, (GS51), which remained until October 1965, presumably working on the 317.
